They play with intensity and concentration second to none while preserving all the lyricism and singing quality of Schubert. They are four distinct individuals who play as a team. The sound recording quality D 956 (CD ASV is outstanding. The Lindsays with Douglas Cummings, cello play with intensity and concentration, as in all of their Schubert, but in this Quintet they place extra emphasis on lyricism and the beauty of the melodies.

Specifically, the stormy interlude of the 2nd movement, which some other ensembles play with an angry or even ugly tone, is song-like here, yet retaining a strong sense of rhythm, somewhat like a barcarole rowing song or berceuse cradle-rocking song. The emotional impact is even more shattering than if they had played it harshly. This is a great recording of one of the great chamber music masterpieces.

Recorded init finds the Lindsays at their youthful best, and the ASV recording enables us to hear all the instrumental voices clearly. High polish isn't the point here -- what comes across is a sense that the players, in the first two movements especially, are creating the music and not just playing it.

The concentration in these long movements 38 minutes in total is amazing, and given that the individual phrases and fragments that make up these pieces don't seem in themselves complicated or particularly impressive, the subtlety with which the material is varied and played in different groupings with a lot of phrasal variety gives these long movements a feel of unity and coherence in addition to the expressive power of the playing.

The sense that beauty is created out of quite ordinary fragments that are given imaginative attention seems to be what Schubert is getting at here, and what's poignant is the sense of the provisionality or fragility that makes up the musical narrative or development.

That sense of fragility is most palpable in the second movement, one of Schubert's great melancholy utterances, and yet the sadness becomes almost the necessary condition of our sense of the music as beautiful. The instruments aren't winds, but the impression of the quiet music being created on the breath is somehow achieved. The final two movements are much more assertive and in publicly recognizable forms -- a sense of dance backed up by a bagpipe drone in the cellos -- and the listener can enjoy and later ponder on the relation between the confident public and robust formality of the last two movements and what seem like more private and darker musings early on.

Absolutely wonderful stuff! Their Album) interpretively makes this disc valuable, as with their Beethoven. Regarding competition, unfortunately the Quartetto Italiano did not record a Schubert Quintet, but the temperamentally similar Guarneri did-only in their Philips disc with Bernard Greehouse in which profound interpretation is enhanced by the virtuosic skills of its members.

Yes, the playing is a little rough at times, yes the slow movement is far too slow BUT yes, they get away with it and this is certainly one of the top recordings to try.

They play with intensity and concentration second to none while preserving all the lyricism and singing quality of Schubert. They are four distinct individuals who play as a team. The sound recording quality from ASV is outstanding. This set of two CDs includes Quartets No. Schubert wrote the single movement of the Quartettsatz inwhen he was just 23; he saw that his sketches for additional movements would not add anything important and he abandoned them. You will find in it every conceivable emotion plus a moment of drama when the cello, with a long melody in the alto register, suddenly drops to a low D.

It is not a tragic work; like almost all Schubert, it has moments of tragedy, but also plenty of joy, triumph, and serenity.

It appears that reviewer sky and I are severely at odds over the merits of the Lindsays' recording of the Schubert Quintet. Interestingly enough we do agree on one matter. I agree that the Lindsays are not a Franz Schubert ensemble. False intonation and the occasional "scrappy" attack do find there way sometimes often into their performances.

However, to be fair, I've never played or have seen a professional live quartet play anything without similar problems. On this point I find it refreshing that the Lindsays choose to leave in blemishes if their musical point has been made rather than include a vanity splice to prevent reviewers from attacking their technical abilities.

As far as musicianship is concerned, I and many other professioanl chamber music colleagues of mine believe the Lindsays are second to none in there ability to capture the spirit of the compositions.

On a purely technical point, the Lindsays are masterful at their abilities to balance to one another in a fashion that allows every note that needs to be heard ring in total clarity.

  1. Schubert’s Quintet in C major, D. for two violins, viola, and two cellos resonates with me long after I hear it – as do Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. and Bruckner’s 9th Symphony – because the composers invested so much of their inner selves in these works.5/5(10).
